Pat Hathaway is a name that has become synonymous with historical photographs on the Monterey Peninsula, with a collection of over 70,000 images dating from the 1850s-1990s.
The initial collection, received from the window of Carmel photographer Lewis Josselyn in 1970, was the start of an avocation for the Monterey Peninsula’s premier photo archivist. After acquiring this initial collection, Pat continued to acquire works of other early local photographers, including C.W.J. Johnson, George Robinson, E.A. Cohen and L.S. Slevin. Now approaching its 25th year in business, California Views represents the works of over 750 19th and 20th century photographers.
Many of California Views’ images are one-of-a-kind, and Pat possesses the original glass plates (ranging in size from 4″ x 5″ to 11″ x 14″), film negatives (ranging in size from 35 mm to 8″ x 10″), original prints and postcards. He personally prints and mounts images from the Collection. Enlargements normally vary from 8″ x 10″ to 4′ x 8′, but some have been made as large as 44 square feet.
The Collection has been used as a resource both locally and nationally, by publications including National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Sunset, Golf Digest and by media including Good Morning, America and CBS’s morning show Breakfast for Your Head.
Pat is a talented photographer in his own right, and is continuing the tradition of recording the Peninsula’s rich visual history for future generations. It always pleases him to see his own work alongside the historical images from his Collection.
Since its inception, California Views has served as a valuable resource for historians, scholars, writers, journalists, reporters, teachers and students, and it is Pat’s objective to continue the dissemination of historical information to all interested individuals. By acquiring, collecting, cataloging and exhibiting this unique and unequaled Collection, he continues to preserve California’s photographic heritage while making history available to the general public.
Photographers Represented in the Collection
C.W.J. Johnson (1833 – 1903) was the Hotel Del Monte’s first official photographer, from the mid 1880s to the late 1890s. Johnson photographed a variety of subjects, including hotel guests, and farmers and ranchers of the region. He learned photography from William N. Tuttle of Arcata in the mid 1860s. In 1870, Johnson was a very prolific photographer, leaving a rich record of life in the Monterey Bay region. Holdings: 5″ x 8″ and 8″ x 10 glass negatives, original prints, and stereographs.
E.A. Cohen (1859 – 1939) was active from 1898, and some of his earliest views are of Fernside, the Cohen family estate in Alameda. Cohen traveled all over the state, and photographed Yosemite and most of the Missions. He was in S.F. for the earthquake and documented the ruins of the city. He called Monterey County, “the best place to photograph over any place I know.” Cohen used a 5″ x 7″ Pony Premo No. 6, a folding field cameras to record his views, and often hand colored his prints. Holdings: 5″ x 7″ glass negatives, original prints–some hand colored.
Lewis Josselyn (1883 – 1964) was the official photographer for the Forest Theater in Carmel. He also photographed all over California, including the Missions, Yosemite, the redwoods, life in Carmel and the Monterey Bay area, and the building of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast–including the construction of Bixby Creek Bridge. Holdings: 5″ x 7″ glass plates and negatives, and original prints.
A.C Heidrick (1876 – 1955), one of Monterey’s premier photographers, is well remembered for his panoramic views and his school photos. He was active from 1907 to 1945 and did all kinds of photographic work, from making postcards to making long panoramic views around the Monterey Peninsula. Many of the images are of everyday life on the Peninsula and of the Army at the Presidio of Monterey and later Camp/Fort Ord. He had several studios in Monterey: one of the ones, at 109 Lighthouse Avenue in New Monterey, was lost in the oil fire of 1924. Later studios were located at 232 and 482 Alvarado Streets in Monterey. Holdings: include over 300 views by Heidrick himself or by Heidrick & Heidrick Studios.
